Why is it called a Marine Barometer?

Shows pressure to nearest tenth of a mb as well as graphic history of pressure for up to 48 hour with zoom to past 6 or 12 hours.

We have tested this device in comparison to the NWS barometer at the West Point lighthouse near us and to a series of weather maps, taken 4 times a day for 2 weeks during a transpacific crossing. We have also repeated this type of comparison in the 2004 Pacific Cup Yacht Race. This instrument will clearly do the job of evaluating weather maps and spotting pressure changes as early as possible—and in fact do it better than some aneroid instruments that cost 4 or 5 times more. See Starpath Notes on Setting the Marine Barometer.

The unit has these specific advantages: pressure displayed to the tenth of a mb, easy to adjust and set (this one takes digital input as opposed to setting by elevation alone), has a 24-hr clock, and the graphic display is much more versatile than other similar products. It also updates every 6 seconds as opposed to every 15 minutes, which is the standard of many electronic barometers.

Why is this called a "Digital Marine Barometer"?

It is clearly a barometer and it is clearly digital, meaning we read the pressure from digits, not from the position of a dial. But what makes it marine?

The answer is it is imported from France by a company that specializes in nautical products and that is what they chose to call it. It has no features that are unique to the marine environment. It happens to be an excellent device with features that are very useful for marine weather analysis and forecasting, so this is a fair name—other similar devices that are not called marine, have less of these favorable features—but these favorable features are favorable for all applications.

In fact, the majority of our sales are not for marine application at all. They are for weather buffs with no plans for anything on the water, or hospitals to monitor conditions that might affect patient comfort, or for monitoring ventilation or cooling systems sensitive to pressure...or for race car teams to tune their jet engines before each race... or a large number to engineering or scientific companies whose applications are not known to us.

Nevertheless, every mariner, from kayaker to ship captain, ought to own one of these so they know for sure with their own tested equipment what the pressure is now and how it is changing.
