The opportunity to download the StarPilot calculator software is a powerful feature of the program design but this option may not be suitable to all users. It is intended for those already familiar with TI calculators and the process of loading programs into them... or for experienced computer users accustomed to following specific instructions and solving issues unique to their computer system on their own.. However.....
This does not mean that you should not try this if it is a convenient option for you, ie in a hurry or in some place where the shipping is expensive.

Because...
you can know ahead of time if everything works right before you actually purchase the software, and indeed you should not purchase the software until you have successfully loaded the program into your calculator.

That is...
just go ahead and download it and install it (very specific instructions come with the download and supplemented in the tech support notes linked above), and if all has gone properly you will see the program in your calculator and you will come to a screen telling you your CODE and asking for a KEY. If you have got to that stage, then you are certain that all is OK, and you are ready to purchase the software, which will provide the Serial Number needed to register it online to obtain the KEY.

Again...
the download and install is not difficult, even for new users — it is simple for those who have done this before with other TI calculator programs — but it does require that you are accustomed to working with serial port or USB inputs into your computer and it requires that you are willing to work out any snags that might occur on your own.
