Pertinent calculator advantages of the TI-89 over the TI-86 — Four times faster than the StarPilot-86 — Higher resolution display — Program archived in ROM with permanent KEY — Improved data entry procedures which use previously entered values as default values for new entries. — Easier to restart computations, if changes are made underway in any process.
Navigation advantages of SP-89 over SP-86 — SIGHT PLANNER function now includes a versatile BEST SIGHTS option which will identify the best sight combinations out of the myriad of possibilities, making the planning faster and the ultimate fix more accurate. — SIGHT ANALYZER function now allows users to select from all stored sights just the ones to be analyzed. (In the 86, all sights stored must be analyzed together, which means if you choose to use this function you must enter your sights in specific groups.) — Enhanced BODY SELECTOR display with more sorting and selection features, makes routine sight reduction process faster. — New SIGHT ARCHIVER allows the storing of sight sequences in ROM by name and with comments. (SP-86 cannot store sights in the calculator, but it can export them to a PC for saving.) — Expanded Almanac search routines with more informative displays and use the use of star magnitudes to limit searches to bodies of selected brightness. — SP-89 can do historically accurate sights for Saturn; the 86 does not have space for that, but will do all other bodies accurately back to the 16th century. — Includes new "redo" feature which allows one to easily re-compute a previously reduced sight after changing just one or more input values. (In the 86 all data needs to be re-entered to repeat a sight reduction.) — SP-89 has an extensive amount of additional RAM and ROM which may be used for 3rd party applications, or for our own additions, which will include several new piloting fix routines... such as the new Magnetic Variation computation which is done in the 89 but not in the 86. In short StarPilot-89 is faster, with enhanced input options, and includes more features than StarPilot-86. It is also better suited to 3rd party programs. If anyone intends to use the calculator for additional tasks or programs other than simple math, the 89 is very much more convenient for this type of usage. On the other hand, if you do not need any of these enhancements, then the StarPilot-86 will do the job for you, in a calculator that costs less. You can rest assured, there is no navigation calculator in the world superior to the StarPilot-86 (...other than our own 89 version, which has enhancements you may not need).
Also note that the actual StarPilot program costs the same for any version ($129 downloaded). The difference in cost for the full product ($279 for the SP-86 vs. $349 for the SP-89) reflects the increased cost of the TI-89 calculator. |
