Wind Weather and Waves
The best book we have seen on Great Lakes weather. Many excellent cloud photos and illustrations - the book was produced by Skyart Productions, which are specialists in photograhpy and other art work. The book is filled with very specific examples and guidelines for mariners. The book was formerly called "Great Lakes Marine Weather Guide" in analogy to Environment Canada's also excellent book on marine weather of British Columbia.

"If we thought of the Great Lakes as inland seas, we'd probably treat them with more respect." - Peter Trueman, quoted in Wind, Weather Waves.

This book is a practical guide to marine weather in the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes present a challenge to boaters and this book will make you appreciate the importance of developing a keen weather sense. While focusing on the "inland seas", the weather information contained in this publication can be applied to other waters. This book, with helpful photographs and diagrams, provides a guided tour through the elements with detailed information on:

  • weather systems, clouds and fog
  • regional and nearshore wind effects - everything from cliff effects to valley winds
  • wave patterns and effects - when to seek shelter
  • weather hazards: thunderstorms, waterspouts, snowsqualls and more
  • marine weather services available to you
  • what to do in a marine emergency
Local conditions for Lake Ontario, Erie, Huron/Georgian Bay, Superior and smaller lakes (Simcoe, Nipissing, Nipigon, and Lake of the Woods) are covered in detail. Boaters, canoeists, kayakers, fishers, campers, swimmers and outdoor enthusiasts will find this book to be a valuable resource.

Note that some of the references to Canadian weather sources are out of date in this 1992 publication and it does not include the references to latest excellent NWS resources on Great Lakes, and we should note the Lake Michigan is not covered as much as the others (no Canadian waters), but nevertheless, this remains a unique resource for boaters on the Great lakes. It is also about to be out of print, so we may have the last of these that are available.
