All participants in the Discussion Groups and online courses have the option of using their real name or any other name they choose to be displayed as the source of the posting. For example, if your real name is John Brown, and you do not choose a screen name, then when you ask a question in a group is will say the question is from John Brown. On the other hand, if you choose, say, "Captain John" for your screen name, then all posts will be labeled with that name and your real name does not appear online anywhere. The choice to use a screen name and what name you choose is completely up to you—providing, of course, that the choice is consistent with other rules of course usage and it has not been taken by someone else.
Likewise, there is the option to have your Location posted along with your messages. You can use here what you like, but it is helpful if it lets others online know where you are, ie "San Diego," or if less known place, maybe add the state as well, ie "Paradise, AZ."
At least one value of having the location given is the ability to discover that there are folks in your own vicinity studying the same subject. We have had more than one case of people or even a group of about 4 people, meeting to take cel nav sights together. People who did not know each other before the course.
Also knowing where people are gives others the opportunity to ask them questions about maritime matters or other subjects in their neighborhood. This type of discussion would take place in the Chat Rooms, not the Student Discussion forums.
You can change your screen name and location, as well as email and password using the Ma Account page. The My Account link is on the top right of the main Resources Index page after you have logged in, as shown below. That page does not show these links until you log in, though it otherwise looks much the same.
You can also change your password there to make it easier to remember, and also change your email address. Remember your email address showing there is the address all of your graded quizzes are sent to.
The My Account page is also where you review your scores for various quizzes and also see the solutions to individual quiz problems.
