On page 81 of the text the DR plot from 0000 on July 10 to 0956 on July 10 covers about 45.5 miles. On page 9 of the text, between 0000 and 0956 on July 10 the distance traveled was 65 miles (1066 - 1001). Using the speed x time this distance calculates to 45.5 mm. How do you decide whether to use the log or the speed x time values?

You may have an early printing of the book. In my copy the a-Lon is 39.3'. You can download a new ebook copy of the text that has several updates.
In this particular case, it looks like this AP must have been changed, but in other examples, we actually left the less optimum AP choice to illustrate the effect of wrong choice, which is usually, but not always very small
