The newer versions of this unit as of mid 2009 or so, have added a capacitor to the power circuit that is intended to give users time to change the batteries without losing your settings. Thus you now can have new batteries ready to go, pop out the old and input the new and you save your settings... including calibration.

This is a valuable improvement. They have, however, added this feature with the minimum circuit changes, so now it will not go off at all immediately. When you turn to the off position, it will stay on for about 25 seconds, then go off slowly.

So... think of this as a feature and not a bug!
