I have become enamored with sailing, but sadly live in the desert. My living situation is unlikely to change. I need to find a way to have a boat and keep it safe while I am home, but able to go frequently to sail. Goal is to eventually make a passage (east or west), but I need to build experience. Have looked at waterfront land with ocean access. Have also looked at renting a slip. I feel a bit lost and overwhelmed. Anyone with some experience along these lines, please contact me. One option is buying a boat and putting it into charter. The folks at Seattle Sailing Club our neighbors here on Puget Sound could explain that program to you.
The Shilshole Bay Marina can also explain the costs for a direct slip rental for comparison.

Excellent! I will look into both of those options.

If you have a lake nearby you could buy a small trailerable boat that you can take home every night. Good for learning to sail.

Which desert?
In Phoenix, Lake Pleasant offers keelboat sailing, and Tempe Town Lake offers dinghies.
