Is there a video or discussion comparing these two programs. Are there scenarios where one outperforms the other? I am looking at one to use for planning and to back up the Garmin software on my chart plotters. Since we used OpenCPN for this Coastal Navigation class, I'm familiar with it and have it loaded already. Any reason I should consider switching to qtVlm?

I remember there was a system issue around the time I originally posted but can you point me to info that compares OpenCPN and qtVLM? I'm leaning towards using OpenCPN since I have a little experience with it from the Inland and Coastal Navigation class but interested to see how they compare.

Very sorry to have missed your earlier note. If you are signed up for a course or have a webcard it is best to post within the course (Student Discussion Forums) as all instructors monitor those.
We would recommend qtVlm. We use it in our Marine Weather Course and in our Electronic Chart Navigation course.
Historically we used OpenCPN for Inland and Coastal Nav, but that was when we only used the one chart, the RNC of 18465TR.
Now that all paper charts and RNC are discontinued, we are switching to qtVlm as it has quite a few more ENC features, and ENC are now the only official NOAA charts.
OpenCPN remains a fine tool and for those accustomed to it are well covered for basic nav functions. We support the program and contribute still to its development, but for our training courses we are now using qtVlm.
We do not have a video specifically comparing the two, but we have extensive videos on each one. See individual playlists at www.starpath.com/videos. Also see custom support page and video links at www.starpath.com/qtVlm.
