The problems in Section 6 refer to a formula that I did not find when I read the text for Lesson 3. Where is it and what does it do?

If you do a search in this forum with the word "luminous" you will find references to it several places, along with an extended discussion.

Also the electronic version of the course materials has a search and find all function that is very powerful....
