I have no experience with Electronic charting and have not been able to get OpenCPN to work on my older iMAC. I use a Windows PC at work. I am looking at a laptop for back-up on a bare-boat charter.
Do you have any thoughts/suggestions/recommendations on:
1) programs: OpenCPN or NavX, or others?
2) Size of Screen?
3) Size of RAM
4) Size of hard drive?
Thanks.
Dave

First, the OpenCPN should work on an old iMac, so there may be other issues involved. With that said, it could be that the windows version could offer more. At one point the PC plugin spectrum was better than for the Mac, but they maybe be updated now.

1) We use OpenCPN in our coastal nav course and we use qtVlm in our Electronic Chart Navigation Course and in our Weather Course. Both have PC and Mac versions and mobile app versions.

2) we have purchased dedicated PC computers for navigation and found that Acer laptops for under $400 often do the job just fine. A small screen of just 13" or so should be plenty for chartering work, but the smaller screens may cost more! Some navigators consider the MS Surface pro as top of the line for such applications.

3) and 4) Default sizes should be fine.
