It might be of interest to note that essentially all of the space exploration is navigated by celestial navigation, and it is still the primary navigation system of the Defense Department on earth... since they clearly do not want to rely on a hand full of GPS satellites that are demonstrably vulnerable to jamming.
Needless to say, they take the sights differently and in an automatic manner, but cel nav is still the most basic and accurate system when done in its most sophisticated manner.
In other words, Odysseus set off on his adventures in >900 BC with the only instruction being to keep the Big Dipper on his starboard beam, and now we send space capsules to Mars with the same type of instructions.
