Make a toy boat out of cardboard with the center line drawn in and tape a hiker's compass to it. Then put it on a paper with a line on it so you can align it toward and away on the line. With no error you should get opposite headings when the boat is pointed toward and away along the line. Check this.

Then tape a nut or screw onto the boat card so that the compass heading is thrown off some. Then use the methods of figure 3-3 to find the deviation on that heading. Make a brief write explaining what you did and what you learned from the exercise.

Or check your own real vessel's compass on some heading with this technique, and then write up what you find. Submit this as an answer to this question.
