Where can i buy a used sextant and how do i know i will get a good instrument this way?

If you go to www.ebay.com and search on "sextant" you will get a list of several hundred for sale from around the world. I don't know how you would guarantee that it is a good one. You might send an email to the seller with specific questions. some of the sales have a lot of detail, others do not. There are some very interesting sextants there.

When shopping online, be sure to distinquish between replicas and real working instruments. There are several companies in India, for example, that specialize in making relicas of nautical instruments. Sometimes it is not apparent from the descriptions of these if they are actual antiques, working instruments, or replicas. Some of the replicas are actually quite beautiful, but they are generally not suitable for navigation.
Member Jon R has posted another reply. This one is more directed to the previous reply than to the original question, but it is still pertinent to the ongoing topic. If the discussion has motivated other thoughts that are not related to the present topic, then one should post a new topic rather than post another reply.
