Does anyone have a suggestion on how to improve the accuracy of my moon sights? I am using an artificial horizon and I've found it's difficult to touch the actual image and reflected images. It seems part of the moon is in shadow and so I have to "guess" when they touch. Does this make sense? It doesn't seem to be as difficult with a full moon, or, like this morning, with a perfectly divided half-moon.

Thanks in advance!

Hi John, have you tried just overlapping the two images as opposed to touching limbs, and then reducing as if it was a star sight -- ie only apply refraction correction?

This works well for sun sights in artifical horizon, but i have not tried it with moons at odd phases.

(there may be an issue with parallax, but we can think over that after your tests.)
