Any advice on how to make an effective artificial horizon for use in sighting on Polaris

We have an article online somewhere about artificial horizons, or at least it is in the course materials.
For stars, the common use of water or oil does not work very well except in special cases... and as always, the surface must be protected from even the slightest breeze.
We have had success with fainter stars like Polaris using a plate-glass mirror shimmed to be level using a quality carpenter's level... final shims are business cards. That way you can get enough reflection to do the sights.
As another practical matter, try to have the mirror at a comfortable height so you do not have to lean over.
