We will be taking Allymar down the west coast from Everett Washington later this summer. We plan to come back up to circunmnavigate Vancouver Island in 2008 followed by Mexico in the fall.

What publications will I need to enable us to apply our new sextant skills this summer, and not be out dated in the following years? Starting next year we expect to be cruising 4 years.

Looking forward to putting Tatoosh Island to port

Thanks

Ken

When it comes to celestial navigation alone this is a very easy answer—it is not so easy an answer when you start compiling all the other pubs you need for the coastal navigation aspects, Mexico to BC.

Assuming you want to do everything by the traditional paper and books methods, for cel nav, you need a nautical almanac, sight reduction tables, and some plotting sheets. And the slickest way to solve that is just to buy an almanac and use the NAO sight reduction tables that are in each edition. We cover their use in the course materials and provide a custom work form that makes them very easy to use.

On the other hand, the best cel nav method—once you know how to do it by hand—is to use a calculator or computer solution. There are many fine free products online. This one device will solve all problems for any year, any location. Then just buy an almanac each year as a backup and stow it in a double zip locked bag, because in principle you will not need it at all.

To cover all bodies including moon and planets you need a new almanac each year. For sun and stars alone, however, you can use a Long term almanac
