Just back from Cuba where I practiced my first sights on or near the ocean. The wx did not co operate but I was able to do a number of reductions using the sun, stars and venus.
It did take me over half an hour to convince the cuban adouana that my sextant was not dangerous and could hardly be used against them.
You are right the noon lat-long sight is painfull and tedious.
Since all lakes and rivers are frozen solid here my next actual practice will follow in 3 months and the in the same waters.
What started with my getting a Longines Lindberg watch (with the hour angle printed on the dial and provision for the equation of time) has evolved in a most interesting hobby. The Astra was a good choice..... and so was your course.
