Hello Capt. Miller!

I have been struggling with stupidity throughout this entire endeavor. The main reason is my sloppy "navigator station" and related complementary procedures.

I don't have a printer, so I sketch the questions on a piece of paper and work them out, as indicated. Before I transfer the results to the formal quiz e-sheet, I double check them for discrepancies in the data.

In this test, I rework the problems three (3) times, each time, upon revision, I found myself committing the "expected mistakes" desinged into the problems, in the case of this chapter, namely, to overlook the indicated lats and long with the "mentally fixed" N+W structure.

I corrected the exercises. But when I went to transfer the final results to the e-sheet, I realized I had a small error in my Latitude labeling on one of my result and performed some last minute corrections...

This is rather frustrating experience, since I have developed a sound plotting technique, optimizing the use of the plotting compass to align my parallels with the lat-long grids and even with the angle "Rose". I use the compass as a "back stop" for the placement of the parallel with hairline precision... and works fine.

In addition I did purchase some colored .005 pens used for drafting to further enhanced my visual id of the fix, an unclutter the UPS...

Quite frankly, sir, I wrote down some of the answers from the wrong edition of my plotting sheets editions... Now, since I feel confident with the material, and got a passing grade, I am going to proceed forward with my studies, however, there is a deeper knowledge I have come to realize in flesh..."Slopyness" and improvisation do not have a space on a navigator station!

I guess, in my case, it all boils down to the fact that I need to purchase a new printer so that I can read carefully the questions and avoid this last minute improvisations...

I am posting this for the benefit of any new student without any drafting experience to practice this procedure, and see if it works for them.

Best Regards,

Capt. Jose A. Bonanno

Good day Capt Bonanno,

thank you for pointing out these details. It is valuable for all to hear.

We must agree 100%. If you can't find the pencil you can't draw the line, and this can lead to big errors underway

Organization of the navigation station and the proper plotting tools are fundamental, not just to cel nav but to all of marine navigation.

We are glad to see that our courses are leading to this important conclusion.

In passing, we have a few notes on plotting tools in the online catalog.
