I don't see how to get a HC of 53 34.4'? I've. Been through this
Several times and get a HC of 53 34'. Where does the .4' come from?

You should have the Declination as N19* 34.4'.
Then in Box 5 in the Dec min. Box you should enter that 34.4'.
Since this is a LAN sight and your Box 5 d is 60 the d corr would be 34.4 and that added to the Tab Hc gives a result of 53* 34.4'.

BTW - I should have added that there is no question 5.7 #1 it is 5.8 #1.

Note that these exercises are essentially redoing the ones of 3.4 and we use data from that one to do this one. Before we just did a noon sight, now we are treating the sextant sights as if they were just regular sunlines.
... by the way, i think that exercise was 5.7 in an older edition of our book. If you have a course s/n or an ebook s/n you can download the latest edition at no charge.
There is a big upgrade in the text of the latest edition, called on the cover second edition.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I have an older copy. The corrections are in whole numbers, as the d60 correction at 34.4' would be 34 ? Is the .4 an interpolation between the 34' and 35' ?

Yes, if using Pub 249 it is. we explain that in the old book only briefly in the answers section, but there is a clearer presentation in the new book.
I recommend the new edition as it has expanded coverage of several points and new content, as well as an improved structure of exercises.
