The solution to problem 8-5 is difficult for me to understand. It would seem that if the forward bearing appears unchanged, and the back bearing is decreasing (160 to 135), then the vessel is being set to the right, and should therefore shift course to 315.

The key here is the bearing on the bow is to a very distant target, which means that its bearing will not change even though we change positions, whereas the back bearing was to a close target.

A picture might help here. As we get set to the left, the stern target moves to the right. (Note this picture below is schematic, but the same should hold true if we drew this out more carefully, ie coming out of a channel, looking aft to see a lighthouse on the point, then getting set off of it.)
