I was wondering if there are any simulators avaliable for PC's that I could use to put in practice the Rules of the Road. There is the Ship Simulator 2008 but I don't know if it could be used to practice the Rules of the Road. Does any one know?

The reason why I am asking is b/c in Farwell's Rules of the Nautical Road (8th ed.), the author mentions on pg 3 that "incompetence in collision situations is only rarely related to a lack of knowledge. More often is is a lack of practiced skills..."

The only ones of these i have seen (at reasonable prices) are not that much help. There are quite a few that show lights, but they are not much different than static views. Maybe someone reading will have a suggestion.

We have many related exercises using radar which is generally a bigger challenge than just visual, and our Radar Trainer simulator lets you set up any number or any kind of interaction you like. It also includes a random target generator. Every time you push the button you get a new unknown pattern of traffic headed toward you.

Also this reference you cite is assuming that the operator has complete knowledge of the rules, which can indeed be learned with practice questions.

We do not always agree with the USCG testing methods, but i do believe that if you can answer a random selection of 50 of the USCG Rules questions consistently with a 90% score that you do know the Rules.

We offer ways to practice that online, even if you are not taking part in the NavRules course. As long as have a webcard you can work on the questions.
