This is a good question. The first answer is no, that functionality for selecting from the main database only questions for a specific rule is not included in the product. However, there are several ways to approximate this result and several related notes.

The first note is, as far as the USCG license exams are concerned, they do not ever ask questions that are tied to specific rule numbers nor to they ask questions on a specific rule citing it by number. In other words, if a candidate did not know the actual rule number for any of the rules they could still pass with 100% on any exam.... as it is in the real world on the water.

Second, many of the questions on the exams -- and essentially all encounters in the real world -- are not governed by a single rule, but rather multiple rules that apply to both vessels involved. This is demonstrated clearly in court cases where we learn that essentially all collisions involve the violation of at least one rule by both vessels.

But for training purposes, it is clear that studying rule by rule is the most logical approach. With this in mind, we have in the Nav Rules Trainer software product and in our online course on the Nav Rules a section that takes each rule and provides and extensive discussion of the rule followed by several example questions for that specific rule. These are questions that we have learned from our teaching experience are important representatives of the specific rules. So in this regard we do have several questions presented according to each specific rule.

Further, and most to the point, you can use the search engine to effectively pull out questions related to specific rules. And this usually works because the USCG exam set tends to use the exact wording from the rules... in fact this is a good way to spot the right answer, as it will be the one that has the exact wording from the rules, whereas other similar answers are worded differently.

Thus filter on "narrow channel" to get questions on Rule 9, and so on.... or use "overtaking" etc. Remember that you can filter on overtaking and then filter those results on narrow channels to get all questions on overtaking in narrow channels. Also remember to use the most general form, ie search on narrow channel, not narrow channels.

To enhace the process, firs test your search on the rules themselves, ie seach on whistle, to see what rules that brings up, then search on whistle to get the questions.
