The StarPilot 89 calculator has a convenient function added that allows you to interrupt the navigation functions to do math calculations in large numbers, rather than relying on the TI very small digits. Access it by pressing the F5 key twice, when done press Esc key to return to navigation. The virtue of this function is it presents the calculations in large easy to read numbers whereas the native ti-89 calculations are in very small numbers and it makes a quick and easy transition between these two modes.

Several times (4 or 5 in the past 10 years in all products in use) a user has found that this function stops working. We do not know why.

To fix it you need to clear the calculator memory completely and then reinstall the program. For this you need a PC with TI-connect or related program, the cable to connect them, a copy of the program (free download), and the KEY to your calculator that you got on purchasing the StarPilot.

We do not recommend doing this when you are underway and relying on the calculator. the absence of this function does not interfere with any function of the calculator and you can still do math with small numbers. But it is straightforward to do at home, when a snag would not be inconvenient.

then clear the memory and reload the calculator then enter your key to activate the program.
complete memory clear is [2nd] [Mem] [F1] and [all]

then follow the manual for installing the program.
