On September 18, 2007, the US Department of Defense announced that it intends to stop procuring Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites with the capability to intentionally degrade the accuracy of civil signals. Thanks for that news Dan. We have archived that note in case it goes missing.

The GPS system, does however remain a system controlled by the military, so it can still do whatever it might deem needed at any time, such as simply shutting it off completely... or blocking certain areas. GPS is also a system that can be jammed from the surface locally without extremely high technology, so as mariners planning on a life that is independent of government resources, we should still look to celestial navigation as the one and only dependable worldwide navigation system.
