If not, there is an inexpensive way to do that with the dAISy unit. It is a remarkable tool made by a neighbor of ours here in Seattle. With that unit and a stubby or any portable antenna you can collect live AIS target information into a program like OpenCPN and practice with the various collision avoidance displays available. Ultimately, an AIS receiver of some sort should be considered mandatory equipment on any cruising or racing boat, so it pays to learn its use early.

It can even be instructive to run this on the boat while at the dock if you are near a waterway with traffic. It will see targets within 2 or 3 miles off, and some farther.

We are standing by to help with the setup as called for and with the interpretation of the Closest Point of Approach (CPA) data displayed.

Besides this practice, these units then make a great backup for the more expensive console units and they are great to take with you when you charter or race. The dAISy and a portable GPS and your laptop is a complete portable set of nav instruments.
