Can someone recommend a free GRIB viewer that shows the great lakes? I currently use uGRIB but it does not show the great lakes in its base map.

I notice that you are signed up for the online weather course. May i suggest that posting there generally gets quicker responses as more instructors are watching it.
There are about 4 different grib viewers listed in the text book and if you check latest news in the online course you will find another one that looks very promising.
I think the Ugrib viewer and data source will get you the GFS model data over that region, but they just don't show the lakes on the maps. But it does show you the lat lon of the cursor, so if you have your own sketch of lake of interest with a few lat lons you can identify the data that way.
with that said, the other viewers listed in the course do show the lakes and makes it easier.

UGRIB is no longer in business. For the Great Lakes best bet is HRRR model from saildocs.

Just ran across this, so i add a follow up here. Rest of the discussion is in the weather course.
Best viewer and data source if you have a Mac is from www.luckgrib.com. This is state of the art for any platform, but happens to be Mac only. costs $20.
Otherwise you can view gribs in almost any echart program, a good free one is www.opencpn.org. This is Mac or PC.

Passing by and saw the topic of this discussion, and had to add this: LuckGrib for iOS is officially launched yesterday. It costs $20, but is state of the art, a real joy to work with. Also data from all of the many model sources available can then be exported to your computer, pc or mac. This is the only source for some of the best wind data available in the US.
