How do atmospheric rivers fit within the framework we've learned for frontal systems, low pressure systems, and the like?

NOAA has some information on their site (https://research.noaa.gov/article/ArtMID/587/ArticleID/2926/Atmospheric-Rivers-What-are-they-and-how-does-NOAA-study-them), but it doesn't clearly tie into the structures of lows and frontal systems, although it does indicate an association with lows.

Thanks for the reminder. Good timing!

I was planning to make a video to discuss this concept and have put if off. It is a little bit like snow and rainbows, in that they are interesting but do not affect our navigation, so we do not cover the topics in class, but since they are so much in the news, we need to say something and will do so. We have powerful tools with the model data and grib viewers we can access so we can see these things very clearly and how them move, see how they are formed, etc.

Note, your query showed up in the Public Weather Discussion, which is fine, but since you are in the weather course, i will move a copy into that forum and we can go over details there to share with the class.
