Hi David -

I'm all updated with a new webcard and continuing our email thread here as you suggested (pasted below).

Luckgrib with OFS looks like a great resource for predicting currents however I am confused by the absence of slack water. When you look at the meteogram for a given point, the current never seems to get to zero. Is that possible? Am I reading this wrong? See attached image for example of meteogram off point off Campbell River near Seymore Narrows.

I'm also disappointed to hear that Navionics needs to be "tested." I'm curious if you can share the basis for that concern? I called them and they say they are using maps direct from CHS that are updated "continuously." Their software is nearly effortless to use... I would love to run OpenCPN but it is not available on an iPad and I'm reluctant to bring a laptop. Is there an affordable maps set for qtVlm? Other solution?

I did see your excellent blog on R2AK resources but it's from 2018 I believe so I thought I'd check in for updates...

Great thanks, Jonathan Kaplan (former Starpath student)

Hi Jonathan

There are new sources. You can read about them at www.luckgrib.com/models look into OFS for current data, WC and SS regions.

If you care to reactivate your web card we can carry on with more questions and details in the marine weather course. If you use Navionics, it would be best to test every thing you depend on, both currents and charts! OpenCPN has a cheap set of official CND charts for the region. You can compare OFS and harmonics using qtVlm. we have a video on that. I think i have a blog post on navigation of the R2AK.

To reactivate, see www.starpath.com/webcards

Hi David and Starpath friends-

I hope this finds you well. I'm a graduate of both your Nav and Marine Weather courses and am now prepping for R2AK next month. Obviously, getting the currents right is important. I'm aware of a wealth of currents data and wonder if you have any guidance for me on what is best. The Navionics package is by far the easiest to use but maybe there's a good reason to be using a different resource as well. What's the best workflow for daily use? I would be grateful to know if you think any of the sources below can come off my list or if I'm missing a better one. Great thanks, Jonathan Kaplan

Canadian Current Atlas (San Juans to Strait of Georgia only)
PNW Current Atlas (elegant app by Tiny Octopus that seems similar in coverage to above)
Canadian Hydrographic Service's Tides and Currents tables (most of region but calculating values at secondary sites is a bit of work). Seems like a good backup to Navionics.
Navionics on iPad (very easy to read and use tide/current data)
Ports and Passes (gets lots of praise on the internet but not sure how it differs from Canadian source documents)
NOAA's Tides and Currents Map is great but I can't figure out a downloadable version -- it's useless without internet connection.
