hmmm! here is a question
knowing the suns LAN changes, throughout the year, because of declination.
if we could take an altitude reading at the exact moment it is highest in the sky, is there a simple formula to determine ones latitude, provided we have the altitude?

Yes. that is called in cel nav a standard "noon sight." It is discussed in some detail in the Emergency Nav book.
