These sights are one way to find GMT from the moon if you lose track of time but have all your other cel nav gear in order... ie sextant, almanac, plotting tools, and a watch but without known watch error. this method is a way to find the watch error.

It is discussed with an example in Section 14.3 of the book, and there is a different example worked out in detail online at this Starpilot solution to lunar altitudes.

Note there is also a recent article by Dr. George Gennett on a trick to optimize the sights. See Longitude by Lunar Altitudes Simplified. This article inlcudes another example that can be worked by his shortcut method or by the longer method given above.
