sea fog A type of advection fog formed when air that has been lying over a warm water surface is transported over colder water, resulting in cooling of the lower layer of air below its dew point. See also haar. Sea fog can cover vast areas of the ocean. It moves around in mass according to the present wind. In contrast to radiation fog, sea fog can come with strong winds and often does. Wind, however, is not directly related to the sea fog itself, it just happens that regions characterized by much sea fog are also characterized by much strong wind. See ART-19 on fog. A schematic presentation of its production is shown in G269. |
