shamal

Shamal are north to northwest winds in the Persian Gulf, sometimes used to describe all northerly winds in that part of the world, but usually restricted to strong winds — often strong during the day, but decreasing during the night. The shamal often leads to reduced visibility in near coastal waters due to dust and sand storms.

On land throughout the Arabian peninsula, it is spoken of frequently, much as a norther is in Texas.
