ship weather routing

A procedure whereby an optimum route is developed based on the forecasts of weather and seas and the ship's characteristics for a particular transit. Within specified limits of weather and sea conditions, the term optimum is used to mean maximum safety and crew comfort, minimum fuel consumption, minimum time underway, or any desired combination of these factors.

The ship weather routing service of U.S. Navy is called Optimum Track Ship Routing (OTSR).

Several commercial companies around the world provide this service to the maritime community; they are listed in the Source Book.

A general discussion of weather routing is in ART-9.

See sample routing examples in G265.
