small area plotting sheet

For a relatively small area, a good approximation of a Mercator position plotting sheet, constructed by the navigator by either of two methods, numerically or graphically as shown. Numerically, the number of miles to a degree of longitude can be determined by 60 x cos(latitude).

Forms such as this which come preprinted are called universal plotting sheets. These forms are convenient for plotting weather patterns when other charts are not available.
