squall line

Any non-frontal line or narrow band of active thunderstorms (with or without other squalls in the region); a mature instability line. Squall lines often include severe squall conditions. They are typically located some 100 miles ahead of a fast moving cold front. Occasionally, they are visible on satellite photos of the cloud cover.

Sometimes, but rarely, they are shown on weather maps marked with a line of dash dot dot dash symbols.

See ART-23 on squalls. See G445.
