stratiform Descriptive of clouds of extensive horizontal development, as contrasted to the vertically developed cumuliform types. It simply means layers of clouds, usually relatively thin layers of clouds, as opposed to heaps of clouds. See stratus, altostratus, cirrostratus, nimbostratus, stratocumulus. See also cirriform.
