subtropical Highs

The region of descending air poleward of the tradewind belts from about latitude 30° to 40°. This is a region of high pressure and the location of the semipermanent mid ocean Highs (anticyclones). The circulation around these Highs on the poleward sides blends in with the prevailing westerlies; the circulation on the equatorial sides blends into the trade winds. Also called horse latitudes, especially in the Northern Hemisphere of the Atlantic. See Pacific High and Bermuda High.
