sunspot One of the dark spots on the sun's surface. These spots are apparently magnetic in character and exert a disturbing influence on radio propagation on the earth. They are in effect gigantic storms in the sun's plasma atmosphere, often hundreds of times larger that the earth's diameter. They can some times be observed in a sextant telescope when taking sun sights.
