danger circle

An analogous phrase to danger bearing, meaning used as a guide to staying out of trouble. With radar a danger circle can be set on the VRM and then used as a guide for rounding a corner. As long as the VRM ring does not go on shore, then you know you are at least that far offshore.

You can also set danger circles with rings on the vessel icon within an echart program. Thus with a 0.5 mile ring around the vessel you have a quick view of that region around you as you proceed along the waterway, which zooms properly as you change scales on the display.

One trick that is convenient with radar is that when using say the 6 mi radar range with 1 mile rings, you can then set 6 rings on the vessel icon in your ECS (electronic charting system) and thus you see on the echart display exactly what you should see on the radar screen. This is a very nifty trick if you cannot id what you see on the radar.
