echart An electronic file of a nautical chart that is intended to be displayed on computer or mobile device or within a console mounted GPS and chart display unit. There are Raster Navigational Charts (RNC) which are bitmap images of actual paper charts, and there are Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC), which are vector products of the same maps. US versions of both formats are available online at no charge. See www.starpath.com/getcharts. There are also various proprietary commercial versions of vector charts, of which the C-map series and Navionics are popular versions. These are often used in GPS units or chart plotters.
