parallel sailing

The process of following a particular latitude to cross the globe, or more specifically, to reach a point at known latitude, to sail well to windward of the location till you reach the right latitude, then turn to follow that latitude to the location. In early navigation this was done using Polaris to mark the latitude, or in some cases zenith stars.
