star path

A sequence of stars rising above the horizon in a line that can be used to mark an approximate bearing for steering without a compass. These paths have been used by Pacific Islanders since ancient times. They can also be made up from circumpolar stars at higher latitudes. This star path concept is the namesake of the Starpath School of Navigation in Seattle.
