GPS compass

A "GPS compass" utilizes two GPS receivers often built into a single antenna module to measure differential GPS position and calculate true heading. It is essentially computing two positions on the boat and then computing the direction between them. Also called "vector compass."

The system finds a true heading and does not depend on the magnetic field, however the computers know your lat lon so they can compute the variation and give back magnetic heading as well.

Samples are Furuno Satellite Compass, Simrad HS60 GPS Compass, Omni Marine GPS Compass, and ASB Systems Vector compasses.
