St. Helena High

A climatic high pressure system in the South Atlantic which is periodically centered over the island of St. Helena. This pattern can be a dominant factor in the navigation of several ocean races. See also this video on that race.

This term is a generic descriptor of a High Pressure system much as Bermuda High and Azores High are used in the North Atlantic, but those are more often valid than is this one in the South Atlantic. St Helena at 16º S, 5º 45'W is farther north than most of the fast Highs moving East across the South Atlantic at about 35 S, just below the tip of Africa. This High is not frequent enough to be considered a center of action. See center of action. When a High does firm up anywhere near the center of the South Atlantic it might be called the St. Helena High.
