course to steer

The instruction to the helm specifying the heading to be held that will make good the desired course. With current setting you to the right of the the intended course line, for example, the course to steer (CTS) would be somewhat to the left, so that the boat tracked down the desired course line.

For background: Some navigators use the simple "course" to mean "course to steer," which is indeed the definition in Bowditch and Duttons. The route they want to follow would then be referred to as the intended track. Those using CTS refer to the route they follow as the course.
