Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC)

These are the official vector charts used in ECDIS or other ECS. The standards for their production is an IHO document called S-57. The S-57 standard states what must be in the ENC, but not how it must be displayed. The IHO document that explains how the ECDIS should display the ENC is called S-52. We have a set of links to US and international ENC at starpath.com/getcharts.

The official definition (IMO Resolution A.817(19))is "Electronic navigational chart (ENC) means the database, standardized as to content, structure and format, issued for use with ECDIS on the authority of government-authorized hydrographic offices. The ENC contains all the chart information necessary for safe navigation, and may contain supplementary information in addition to that contained in the paper chart (e.g. sailing directions) which may be considered necessary for safe navigation.
