CPA (closest point of approach) The minimum distance between you and an approaching radar target vessel that will occur as the target passes if no course or speed changes are made. This distance can be determined (anticipated) from radar observations while the target is still some distance away and used to evaluate risk of collision. This is a fundamental concept in radar usage. This distance is distinguished from the usually larger distance off that occurs when a vessel crosses your course line dead ahead or astern.
