AWS (apparent wind speed) The wind speed and direction you observe from a moving vessel as distinguished from the true wind. Apparent wind directions are usually specified in relative bearings. The apparent wind always comes from a direction forward of the true wind on a moving vessel. See also apparent wind angle (AWA), apparent wind direction (AWD), and apparent wind speed (AWS)
