float plan

This is what the USCG calls your "flight plan" for a voyage, be it a day sail or ocean crossing. It is a document or email that lists such things as:

1. when you are leaving
2. where you leave from
3. where you are going (with any contact links at that end)
4. when you expect to arrive (with any anticipated uncertainties)
5. full description of your boat (model, length, color, power, fuel, etc)
6. communications equipment on board
7. safety equipment on board
8. navigation equipment on board

PLUS a list of all crew on board, with contact info, age, and gender.. and crew positions if known.

PLUS whatever else might be unique or pertinent to this voyage... such as planned route, weather sources to be used, etc.

Needless to say, it should be someone's responsibility to keep this up to date if changed.

This document is not filed with the USCG, but instead with all interested parties such as family members and friends. In the unlikely event it is needed by the USCG it could be passed on to them.
